Lapis Lazuli

This is my ring, Lapis and 14 karat gold. I made it approximately 20 years ago. While on a trip overseas I spotted some Lapis in a store and became intrigued with it so when I got back home I began to work on what you now see.
Lapis Lazuli is a rock. Typically it is found with veins of calcite and or pyrite running throughout. It has been used for thousands of years in such things as vases, bowls, works of art and even ground to a powder and used as pigmentation for painting and make up. The most rare examples are intense blue with almost no traces of calcite or pyrite present. The important amounts and better quality mines are found in Afghanistan, Russia and Chile however it is found in the United States and Canada.
